Britney Spears Loses Custody

Britney Spears was ordered to surrender custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon ruled that Federline will take custody of his sons beginning Wednesday "until further order of the court." Earlier this month, Gordon said Spears engaged in "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol" and ordered her to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week as part of her ongoing custody dispute with Federline. Spears also was previously ordered to meet weekly with a "parenting coach" who was to observe and report back to the court about her parenting skills. Both Spears and Federline must complete the court's "Parenting Without Conflict" class. Spears and Federline were married in October 2004. She filed for divorce last November and it became official in July.

Britney Spears kicked off the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," looking bleary and unprepared. An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards, but for all the wrong reasons. She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape. MTV hyped Spears appearance as the evening's most anticipated performance, but it became the most shockingly bad of the night. Jive Records might want to push back that Nov. 13 album release date.
